Taking Grounding for Granted

Body Mind Spirit

One day I came home from playground with my little son and I felt so calm, energised, positive and happy. Do you know what we did? We were laying rolling running in the grass, digging some holes, having fun. We put our shoes on and went back home. As we walked in to the house I asked him to take his shoes off and then it hit me. It should be in reverse. Do you remember being a little kid, running around the garden barefoot and feeling free?

Modern Lifestyle and Grounding

As adults in this modern life, we always wear shoes outside, we sleep in beds, live in houses, travel in cars, work in high buildings. We have become increasingly disconnected from nature by our modern lifestyle. Some without even realising it may go days, even years without having that direct contact with the earth, even if we are outside! And it’s the most basic, simple and natural thing you can do for your health.

Look back to the history on the way our ancestors lived. They walked, sat and slept on the ground, cultivated their land with bare hands and spent a lot of their time naturally grounded.

What is Grounding

Earthing/grounding is putting your body in direct contact with the earth. This means that your skin needs to touch soil, sand, water, or a conductive surface that is in contact with the earth.

How Grounding Effects Your Health

The idea is that the Earth maintains a negative charge (electrons). Our bodies, especially in modern life build up positive charge (free radicals that have been linked to premature aging, inflammation, and disease). Over time, the theory is that this positive charge builds and can lead to health problems.

By reconnecting with the earth through direct contact with the earth`s surface (grounding) free electrons from the earth are taken up into the body helping neutralise damaging excess of free radicals and returning the body to a balanced, neutral state.

These free electrons work like natural antioxidants that offset the damaging effects of our modern lifestyle allowing our body to heal and repair naturally thus helping us to remain in good health.

Some research studies even recommend grounding to improve blood viscosity, heart rate variability, inflammation, insomnia, reduce effects of stress and more.

Getting Back in Touch with Nature (literally!)

Ok maybe you don`t have to roll in the grass as I did but there are some easy ways to introduce grounding into your daily routine or mindfulness, meditation or yoga practice. This will help to calm your emotions, clear your mind and recharge your energy.

  • Take your shoes of as you walk outside the house! Take a mindful stroll outside whether it’s in your grassy backyard, a beach, or the local park during your lunch break

  • You can practice grounding with some outdoor meditation or your yoga practice; no mat please 🙂

  • Take a nap or just rest in the grass

  • Introduce glove free gardening

Don`t take grounding for granted. Make sure you schedule it into your daily routine.

See you outside barefooted.
